Highworth

Shrivenham Rd, Highworth

Reserved Matters Submission

A reserved matters application for 238 homes with play spaces, associated public open space, amenities and infrastructure.

The landscape led, edge of settlement development evolved from the outline application through discussions with Swindon Borough Council. A single primary vehicular loop accessed from Shrivenham Road with secondary loop street, tertiary shared streets and private drives provide a clear hierarchy of street types. A network of pedestrian routes enhance the existing Public Right of Way that runs through the site. Glimpse views within and a view corridor through the site enhance the sense of connection through the development and on to Highworth. A natural edge along Shrivenham Road provides a gentle transition from the open countryside into Highworth. The development morphology relaxes away from the road. ‘Pocket parks’ and ‘green fingers’ are created to soften the boundary, blending the countryside and the built environment.

The proposals balance a response to the local character of Highworth in the setting of a modern development. A cohesive architectural approach is proposed utilising traditional form with simplified contemporary detailing to create a distinct ‘Highworth’ character.
